Thinking about getting Xfinity Home but my trusty SB6141 doesn't have native Wi-Fi. I want to own my own modem because it usually doesn't make sense to rent home networking equipment. What retail modem should I get (I want the warranty)? Should I get a modem with a battery or get a separate UPS? Also, talked to the Xfinity rep(not Home but cable/internet/voice) I became thoroughly confused when he insisted that individual devices would need to be in range of my wireless modem/router.
The Home devices use 802.15.4 (zigbee) wireless standard which I understand uses a completely different physical radio. My understanding is that the Home devices create a mesh network with the panel and the panel is what connects with the modem/router. I would need either a separate 802.15.4 and 802.11 router or one that has both radios which I don't think exists even in industrial routers. I would stick with the SB6141 and a good router (I'm a fan of the TP Link Archer C7 right now). There's really no reason to upgrade that modem unless you need 16 channels.
For Xfinity Home, you are correct that the Zigbee devices create a mesh network to the touch screen. The touch screen then uses wifi, and goes back to a Netgear router with custom firmware provided as part of the install. The Netgear router goes between your modem and your personal router (and you can then put your personal router in its DMZ via the touch screen to avoid double-NAT). Sitting in xhome class as we speak. If you're getting your own modem and router just make sure it's docsis 3.0 and is compatible with comcast. Routers are your preference.
Just know that comcast will add the aforementioned sidecar router to operate the touch pad. The zigbees do use their own freqs but if you're doing any of the cameras the wifi is important. I personally wouldn't pay for any warranty because docsis 3.1 is releasing soon and you'll have equipment that's already dated. Hope this helps. Yes, the xfinity home devices uses zigbee (the whole system is pretty much just a rebranded icontrol tca203com touchscreen - you can get detailed technical info from the manual: ). Save yourself the money on zigbee devices and buy them yourself - here is a list of compatible devices: ^^ Depending on how big of a house you have, you can save over a thousand dollars - I am not joking.

Install the zigbee devices yourself too - get some double sided tape to stick them. The installer code for the touchpanel is '4321'. However, removing devices needs a premise passphrase which is randomly generated every day by an offsite server and so you will need to call technician. And comcast provides their own netgear router which communicates with the touchscreen to setup a wpa2 encrypted wifi network that is used only by the touchscreen and wifi cameras. (However, I believe in some areas this separate router is integrated into the comcast all-in-one modem+phone+router thing).

You can keep the netgear router behind your own router without any problems (so long as you open the necessary ports on your router). This is how my own setup looks like sb6141 modem - airport extreme router - netgear router Ask me if you have any questions.
